'66 ElCamino SS 427 Pro-Touring Restomod, 625 horsepower, Marina Blue!

Most custom Pro-touring cars never live up to their stated mission. It takes a well-engineered, well built automobile to actually be reliable and comfortable enough to put all that performance on the road for the long haul. This 1966 Chevrolet El Camino SS 427 does just that. Starts every time. Drives out smooth. The LS7 427 roars like a lion and the suspension grips the road like a boa constrictor. It hauls ass and all your gear.
Marina Blue is the perfect color for this car, same as Trans Am team Corvettes of the era. Same big power, same street performance. Only this El Camino is equipped with GM Performance EFI, no matter if you are crossing the Rocky Mountains or sliding through the Bad Lands, fuel delivery the rock steady predictability. 625 horsepower on tap all the time. Trans Am Corvettes hold the road, no doubt, but the ride is bone jarring. With a deft combination of RideTech/ChassisWorks coil-over suspension holds all that power on the pavement while the seat of the pants feel is downright supple. If you want to carve corners through canyons for hours, knock down miles by the thousands all with energy to spare, this is the pro-touring car for the job. This El Camino isn't just exciting to look at, it is genuinely enjoyable to drive. You will want to, all the time.

EXTERIOR

Excellent custom cars begin with excellent originals. This '66 El Camino began as a all original sheet metal car from Western Oregon. Then it was treated to a complete frame off restoration. It was brought down to bare metal and brought back up, nut and bolt, to the awesome machine you see here. Fit and finish are national show worthy. The builder is well acquainted with what it takes to build a show winner, having won numerous “Best of Shows” on the national stage. In fact, this El Camino SS 427 has been invited to the Good Guys indoor show this month in York, PA for its show debut. This one, is an example of his best work.

INTERIOR

It doesn't matter how good a car looks on the outside if the interior is unsatisfying. The dash and gauges are custom, without looking contrived. The custom four spoke Budnik steering wheel looks at home in the '66 El Camino cabin. It fills the hand, is comfortable to grip, and gives you an unobstructed view of the array of Autometer Ultra-Light II gauges mounted in carbon fiber. The dash bezel and shift console tastefully blend with OEM stock appearing dash pad and door cards. The custom leather seats are sculpted and bolstered for a glove fit like more modern machines yet blend well with factory design cues. The carpets are custom cut and fitted to the cabin. The aim here was to refine, not redefine, what already works so well in 1960's Chevrolet interiors. There is something different about being surrounded in leather. The headliner, interior quarter panels, and A pillars, are all finished in the highest quality glove leather. The cabin seems warmer, quieter, richer.
The features of this custom El Camino car give nothing up to modern cars. The Flaming River tilt steering wheel offers a variety of steering positions to maximize your comfort on long drives. The Autometer GPS Speedometer is gives you super accurate readouts. Vintage Air cools everything down. The FatMat thermal barrier insulates the cabin from engine bay and outdoor heat to keep it cool. The exhaust note lets all the right noises in and the Lizard Skin sound deadender applied to the outside of the floorpans keeps all the wrong noises out.

ENGINE BAY/DRIVE TRAIN

Anyone can drop a crate motor into an old car. It takes a talented artists eye to make the modern mill look at home in a vintage engine bay. This one shows the full artistic flare of blending '57 Corvette engine styling cues with the technical wonders of the LS7 427. The firewall and aprons were sculpted and smoothed to blend with the custom fabricated '57 Vette coil pack covers. Everything looks as it was carved out of a single block, a silvery sculpture that happens to also produce 625 horsepower and the purr of a large cat, standing several stories tall. It is elegant to look at and intoxicating to hear. The polished master cylinder for the Willwood Hydroboost brakes and Vintage Air AC compressor are the perfect accents for this jewel. Cold air is taken up where all race cars of renown inhale, from the lower front fender. Uncluttered beauty.
