1970 Plymouth Superbird, B5 Blue, 4-speed, 440-4bbl w/broadcast sheet, 1 of 69!
This 1970 Plymouth Superbird has been under the care of the current ownership for the past 23 years since June of 2000. This factory EB5-Blue Fire Metallic 440 4bbl Super Commando, 4-speed, bench seat finished in black vinyl was taken down to bare metal, full restoration completed in late of 1999. The car was born on December 12th, 1969, receiving its nosecone and rear wing. Five days later this 'bird arrived in Henderson, Kentucky where the original owner, Mike Zachary, took delivery. The car showed 62,000 original miles from that day to the day of its tear down and rotisserie restoration. Since then, the current owner has driven and enjoyed it for 8,826 miles, the odometer currently reading 70,826 miles.
You'll notice the Petty's Garage emblem on the tail panel lip, the side opposite the Road Runner icon. There's a good reason for it. For the past two decades, the car has been maintained by Petty's Garage and also used by the Petty Family for local events on an as-needed basis. In 2019, Petty tore down and inspected engine as part of a comprehensive engine bay refresh in preparation for the “Kings Court” Invitational Display that year. Petty Enterprises has also used the car for promo at Chrysler's at Carlisle “Grocery Getter” display. Richard Petty, true to form, has signed one of the rear wing struts. Continental Tire has also used the car for marketing purposes. Most recently, this 'bird has even popped up in an episode of the “Toy Maker's” television series.
This Superbird boasts its original fender tag, factory broadcast sheet, previous ownership history and historical records from the Winged Warrior Registry. Judging from photos of the restoration, the factory nose, wing, and sheet metal appear to be original. The right rear quarter looks to be the only significant sheet metal change, using an NOS panel to replace the original as part of the restoration. The engine is a non-VIN stamped period correct RB big block bearing the casting code of 2536430-5 and casting date 1-20-70. The transmission is numbers matching original and the rear end is correct and original. Galen Govier has decoded both the Fender Tag and the Broadcast Sheet for this vehicle. According to Doug Schellinger's Daytona-Superbird Auto Club registry figures, this is one of 204 440-4v w/4-speed known to exist and one of 147 in Blue Metallic, regardless of powertrain combination. Taken all together, this Superbird is one of 69 as equipped. The car sits today as an excellent seasonally driven show car which stands tall when compared to many other offerings we have recently surveyed.

Restored ConcoursVehicle has usually been professionally restored to the current highest standard, using a combination of refurbished original parts, exact reproduction parts, and new old stock (NOS) parts. Attention to replicating factory fit, finishes, and marking details are paid attention to. Bare metal finishes may be mimicked with paints and coatings to prevent corrosion. Paint and body may exceed the quality produced by the factory.
